Insights from the events attended

One of the things I have learned, is "there is always more to learn". Even though I think I have mastered my craft and I have practiced my profession (check out the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell), I still continue to grow each day. Attending a conference or working at a booth I have the opportunity to hear what unique things people are doing in project management and with software every day. Individuals come up to me from around the world and share stories and post questions that drive me to do additional studying or research after the event. I like the fact that at PMI local and national events, the speakers from a variety of industries give presentations which helps me think in new and different ways.

I like the fact that technology sharing is everywhere at Microsoft conferences, and no one is upset if you ask them what electronic gadget they are holding. I am also amazed at how helpful everyone is at these conferences. Just to give you some examples, I was in Toronto walking to a PMI conference and wasn’t quite sure I was going the right way and a fellow attendee from Germany guessed where I was going and helped me get to registration.  At a recent Microsoft conference there was a shortage of cabs and a friendly international group told me they could squeeze in one more if I promised to smile along the ride. Don’t let me forget to tell you, all of these events are fun.  The museums, games, interesting food, concerts, and fireworks are just a few examples of ways to engage with your fellow attendees outside of the formal conference.

I always come back from these events excited and energized and ready to tackle new challenges at work. If you haven’t had a chance to attend a conference, I think you should find one that sounds interesting to you and sign up!
